Cabelte shares knowledge and innovation at CIGRE Portugal

Cabelte took part in CIGRE Portugal, reinforcing our commitment to innovation, knowledge sharing and the development of solutions for more efficient and reliable power networks, ready to meet the challenges of the energy transition.

Alongside our participation in the event, we presented two technical papers developed by Mikhail Dmitriev, César Ferreira and Patricia Rebelo. Both studies are also part of the CIGRE 2026 Paris Session, within Study Committee B1 – Insulated Cables.

Knowledge that addresses real-world challenges

“New methods for the selection of SVL and bonding cable” introduces new approaches to the selection of Sheath Voltage Limiters (SVLs) and bonding cables in cross-bonding systems. Based on EMTP modelling and operational experience, the study challenges some traditionally accepted industry criteria and highlights the importance of considering not only lightning overvoltages but also the effects of cable line switching operations.

The second paper, “Improving the efficiency of renewable energy cable networks”, focuses on the efficiency of medium-voltage networks connecting renewable energy sources to the grid. It demonstrates how cable configuration and installation choices can have a significant impact on energy losses, operating costs and infrastructure reliability.

In one of the scenarios analysed, involving a 10 km cable line, a less efficient configuration could result in up to €3.76 million in additional energy losses over 30 years, based on the €0.20/kWh assumption used in the study.

From Portugal to Paris

Our participation in CIGRE Portugal reflects how we approach innovation at Cabelte: transforming experience and technical expertise into practical solutions and sharing that knowledge with the industry.

By taking these studies from the national stage to the 2026 Paris Session, we are contributing to an international conversation with a shared goal: building more efficient and resilient power networks, ready to support the transformation of the energy sector.

At Cabelte, we continue to connect knowledge, technology and experience to take energy further.
