- Solutions implemented by Siemens will enable productivity increases and reductions in energy consumption and maintenance costs;
- The project, due to be completed in 2026, has the potential to be replicated in other industries;
- The companies signed a memorandum of understanding in the areas of energy efficiency, digitalization and sustainability;
Siemens will support Cabelte, a manufacturer of energy and telecommunications cables, in the process of decarbonizing its business by implementing a pioneering solution in Portugal for the cable industry.
The project, which was co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and is scheduled to end in September 2026, involves replacing the electric motors and drives on all of Cabelte’s production lines and installing a new energy management system. Siemens’ solutions will enable the company to increase productivity, reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs.
In addition, the agreement between the two companies includes technical support from Siemens, which will enable Cabelte to develop and apply new technological solutions. This project can be replicated in other industries, helping to modernize, digitalize and decarbonize the Portuguese industrial fabric.
The partnership between Siemens and Cabelte goes beyond this specific project, with the companies having signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), which reinforces their cooperation for Cabelte’s digital transformation and energy transition. This union is a reflection of Cabelte’s broader strategy to decarbonize the operation and reinforces the two companies’ commitment to working together to implement solutions that prepare the industry for a more decarbonized, sustainable and energy-efficient future.
To this end, the MoU provides for the development of three distinct areas.
In the area of energy efficiency, the development, among others, of solutions and systems for intelligent infrastructures, such as building management, energy communities and the implementation of micro-grids, as well as load management and the integration of electric mobility solutions.
The digitalization component will focus on optimizing and automating production processes using Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Analytics and Digital Twin solutions, as well as improving operational efficiency and capacity.
Finally, the memorandum also includes the definition of a roadmap for the decarbonization of Cabelte.
“As a technology company, Siemens is focused on transforming the daily lives of societies and different industries. This partnership is the result of our shared vision that technology is undoubtedly a lever for efficiency and sustainability. We are proud to support Cabelte on this journey of transition to a more productive, flexible and sustainable operation,” says Fernando Silva, CEO of Siemens in Portugal.
“This project with Siemens signals another step in Cabelte’s strategy to modernize and digitize its operations, making them more efficient and decarbonized. With a strong presence in Portugal, Spain and global markets, we are focused on creating high-quality products, with innovation, excellence and sustainability as our pillars. Our commitment to innovative solutions will allow us to test solutions that can be scaled up and replicated in other industries. The technological revolution is happening and we are at the heart of it,” says Mário Pais de Sousa, Chairman of Cabelte’s Board of Directors.
The agreement between the two companies was made official on November 29, at an event that was also attended by German entities and companies with a strong presence in Portugal and Luís Mira Amaral, engineer and former Minister of Industry and Energy.
Siemens and Cabelte highlight Luís Mira Amaral’s leading role
During the event, Siemens and Cabelte recognized Luís Mira Amaral for the leading role he played in the development of the industry and energy sectors in Portugal, namely as minister of these areas between 1987 and 1995.
The companies particularly highlighted Luís Mira Amaral’s ability to create and promote synergies between Portuguese and German industry, helping to attract significant investment from Germany to Portugal.
